ACCESS 2006 is dedicated to passing legislation allowing adult
adoptees born in Maine access to their original birth certificates. In the state
of Maine an adoptees
original birth certificate is sealed after the Final Adoption Decree has been
made. Adoptees are prevented by law from obtaining a copy of their original
birth certificate, which has been sealed by court order. Members of ACCESS 2006
believe that Maine adoptees have been denied the human right that all other
residents of Maine have and that is to go to the vital records office and get a
copy of their original birth certificate. It is their history, it is their
origin and they have the human right to that information.
