ACCESS 2006 AT THE OLD PORT FESTIVAL

June 5, 2005 Access 2006 members Cathy Robishaw, Helen Slocum and Peter Jensen set up a card table on Exchange St in Portland. They thought this would be a great opportunity to meet and inform the public. It was a perfect day for young and old. Clear skies and temps around 80 degrees. Arriving one hour before the official opening of the festival which was 11:00AM assured them a spot on a wide area of the side walk.  Shortly after 11:00AM the Old Port parade made its way down Exchange Street. After the parade passed the street was crowded. Access 2006 is definitely not on the front page and barely on the last page. We did receive a few people interested in the bill and all were positive. Unfortunately an issue such as ours doesn’t spark the interest of the public until it becomes publicly controversial. By 1:30 PM we had enough of the crowds and hot weather and packed it in. Although a little discouraged it was really nice meeting the people who felt what Access 2006 was doing is the “Right Thing To Do”.
